HDPE Chemical Compatibility: What You Can and Cannot Store in an IBC

A guide to how high-density polyethylene reacts with common chemical classes, why compatibility charts matter, and how to avoid swelling, cracking, and permeation failures.

The bottle of an IBC tote is made of high-density polyethylene, a tough and widely compatible plastic that is exactly why these tanks are so versatile. But HDPE is not universally inert. Some chemicals swell it, some make it brittle, some permeate through it, and a few attack it outright. Knowing where the limits lie is essential before you commit a product to a reused tote, especially one that has already served a previous life.

Why HDPE Works So Well

HDPE resists a broad range of acids, bases, salts, alcohols, and water-based solutions, which covers a large share of industrial and food-grade liquids. It does not corrode like metal, it tolerates a useful temperature range, and the resin used in food-contact applications is governed by federal food-additive regulations such as 21 CFR 177.1520, which addresses olefin polymers for food contact. That combination of chemical breadth and food-safe pedigree is why HDPE became the standard for IBC bottles.

Where HDPE Struggles

The trouble starts with certain organic chemicals and strong oxidizers. Broadly, the categories to approach with caution include:

  • Aromatic and chlorinated solvents, which can swell or soften the wall
  • Many hydrocarbons and oils, which permeate slowly and can leave lasting odor
  • Strong oxidizers such as concentrated nitric acid, which can degrade the polymer
  • Some essential oils and fragrances, which permeate and embed in the plastic
  • Hot product near the upper temperature limit, which reduces strength and creep resistance

Understanding the Failure Modes

Incompatibility shows up in predictable ways. Swelling occurs when a chemical is absorbed into the polymer, causing the wall to soften and distort. Environmental stress cracking happens when certain agents, including some surfactants, attack the plastic under mechanical stress, producing fine cracks at high-stress points like the fill neck. Permeation is more subtle: the chemical slowly migrates through an intact wall, so the tank looks fine while losing product and absorbing odor. Each mode can compromise a fill long before an obvious leak appears.

Use Compatibility Charts the Right Way

Manufacturer compatibility charts are the starting point, but they are not the whole answer. A chart rates a chemical at a given concentration and temperature, and your real conditions may differ. Concentration, temperature, exposure time, and whether the product is a mixture all shift the outcome. Treat a chart rating as guidance to be confirmed against the product's safety data sheet and, for critical applications, validated with the tote manufacturer or supplier.

The Reused-Tote Wrinkle

Compatibility is doubly important for a reused tank because of what came before. A bottle that previously held a solvent may carry absorbed residue that affects both its current condition and any new product. And the gaskets and valve seals have their own compatibility limits, often narrower than the HDPE bottle itself. A tank can be chemically sound while its EPDM gasket swells in a solvent it was never meant to see. Always check the seals, not just the bottle.

A Practical Decision Process

Before committing a product to a tote, identify the chemical and its concentration, check HDPE compatibility for your temperature and exposure, confirm the gasket and valve materials suit the same product, and account for the tank's prior contents. When the answer is uncertain, run a small-scale or short-duration trial, or choose a purpose-built container instead. The few minutes spent checking compatibility are trivial against the cost of a swollen, cracked, or leaking tank full of product.
