Reading a UN 31HA1/Y rating
The UN code stamped on a rated tote is not decoration — each character certifies something specific about the design and what it may legally carry. Here is the breakdown.

When do I actually need a new first-trip tote?
Choose first-trip when a spec or audit requires packaging that has never held another product: pharmaceutical intermediates, regulated food programs, sensitive chemistries, and supply chains that demand virgin packaging with tamper-evident closures and full documentation. For most other jobs a reconditioned, rebottled or used tote does the same work for far less money and carbon.
What does the UN 31HA1/Y marking mean?
Read it in parts: 31 = a composite IBC for liquids; HA = a rigid HDPE inner receptacle with an outer steel frame; 1 = the design type; and Y = approval for medium-hazard contents (packing groups II and III). The mark is stamped on the tote along with the manufacture date and test details, and it is what lets a rated tote legally carry regulated liquids on public roads.
Does a UN rating last forever?
No. UN-rated IBCs carry age limits and periodic inspection and leakproofness retest intervals. New first-trip totes carry the strongest, freshest ratings; reconditioned units can retain a rating only within its valid period and after the required inspections. If your application is regulated, tell us your material and we will match a unit with appropriate, current certification.
