Building a Backyard IBC Aquaponics System: Fish, Plants, and Recycled Totes

Aquaponics marries two ancient ideas, fish farming and soil-free growing, into one closed loop where fish waste feeds plants and plants clean the water for the fish. The 275-gallon IBC tote is the unofficial mascot of the backyard aquaponics movement for good reason: one tank gives you a deep fish reservoir and a wide grow bed from a single, inexpensive vessel. This guide walks through cutting, plumbing, and cycling a tote-based system you can run on a patio or in a greenhouse.

How the Loop Works

Fish in the bottom tank produce ammonia-rich waste. Water is pumped up to a grow bed, where beneficial bacteria convert that ammonia first to nitrite and then to nitrate, a form of nitrogen plants love. The plant roots absorb the nitrate, cleaning the water, which then drains back down to the fish. Nothing is wasted, and the only regular inputs are fish food, a little electricity for the pump, and occasional top-up water to replace what plants transpire.

Cutting the Tote: One Tank, Two Components

Start with a clean food-grade tote that previously held food-safe contents. A common design slices the tote horizontally, roughly one-third of the way down from the top. The shorter top section, flipped upside down and seated back into the steel cage, becomes your media-filled grow bed. The taller bottom section becomes the fish tank. Cut carefully with a jigsaw along the cage frame, deburr the edges, and rinse out all plastic shavings before you add water or livestock.

Materials You Will Need

  • A clean food-grade IBC tote, cut into a grow bed and a fish tank
  • An aquarium-rated submersible or external pump sized to your tank volume
  • An air pump and air stones to keep dissolved oxygen high for the fish
  • Expanded clay pebbles or lava rock as inert grow media
  • A bell siphon or timed drain to flood and drain the grow bed
  • Food-grade tubing, bulkhead fittings, and a uniseal or two
  • A water test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH

Plumbing the Flood-and-Drain Cycle

Most tote builds use a flood-and-drain grow bed. A pump pushes water up into the media bed; when the water reaches a set level, a bell siphon snaps open and drains the bed fast, pulling oxygen down to the roots, then reseals so the cycle repeats. This rhythmic wet-dry pattern is what keeps roots healthy and bacteria thriving. Install a bulkhead at the base of the grow bed for the siphon and another return line back to the fish tank. Test the siphon with plain water for a full day before any fish go in.

Cycling the System Before Adding Fish

Do not rush livestock into a new build. You first need to grow the nitrifying bacteria that make the loop work, a process called cycling that takes four to six weeks. Add a small ammonia source and run the pump continuously, testing the water every few days. You will watch ammonia rise, then nitrite appear, and finally nitrate, the signal that your bacterial colony is established. Only when ammonia and nitrite both read near zero is the system ready for fish.

Choosing Fish and Plants

In New England's climate, hardy fish that tolerate temperature swings do best unless you heat the water. Tilapia grow fast but need warmth; goldfish and koi are forgiving ornamental options if you are growing only for the vegetables. Leafy greens such as lettuce, kale, basil, and chard thrive in aquaponics and tolerate the nitrate levels a modest fish load produces. Fruiting crops like tomatoes and peppers are possible once your system is mature and heavily stocked enough to supply the extra nutrients they demand.

Daily and Weekly Care

Feed the fish only what they finish in a few minutes; overfeeding spikes ammonia and fouls the water. Check that the pump and siphon are cycling, and top up water lost to evaporation and transpiration with dechlorinated water, since chlorine harms both fish and bacteria. Test your water chemistry weekly and keep pH in a range that suits fish, bacteria, and plants together, generally on the slightly acidic to neutral side. Healthy systems settle into a quiet equilibrium that needs only minutes of attention a day.

Safety and Food Considerations

Always start with a food-grade tote, and never use one that held chemicals, since residues can leach into water that your fish and edible plants live in. Use food-safe tubing and fittings throughout. Provide a GFCI-protected outlet for any pump or heater near water, and shade the fish tank to prevent overheating and algae. If you ever lose power for an extended time, a battery-backup air pump is cheap insurance that keeps your fish alive.

The Payoff

A well-run IBC aquaponics system uses up to 90 percent less water than soil gardening because the water recirculates instead of draining away. You harvest fresh greens within weeks and, eventually, fish, all from a reused container that would otherwise sit idle. It is a hands-on lesson in ecology for kids and adults alike, and once the loop finds its balance, it practically runs itself.
