Answer first: a food-grade IBC tote is one whose bottle has only ever held FDA-approved edible contents and has been cleaned to a verified standard. The HDPE resin itself is often identical to an industrial tote — what changes is the documented fill history and the cleaning validation. If your product touches food, beverages, or anything ingestible, buy Grade A. For everything else, Grade B saves money and resources.
What 'food grade' really means
- ✓Prior contents were FDA-compliant (e.g. food oils, syrups, juice concentrate, vinegar).
- ✓The bottle was triple-rinsed and, where required, hot-washed and sanitized.
- ✓No prior industrial chemical, fuel, or pesticide use is documented.
- ✓The resin meets 21 CFR 177.1520 for food-contact polyolefins.
When industrial (Grade B) is the right call
Collecting rainwater for irrigation, making compost tea, storing windshield fluid or brine, running a hydroponic system, dust suppression on a job site, or holding non-potable process water — all are perfect Grade B applications. You get the same rugged container for less money, and you keep a perfectly good tote in service instead of buying virgin plastic.
